Ammianus Marcellinus
Abstract
This chapter features selections from Ammianus Marcellinus, a Greek-born soldier and historian whose Latin Res Gestae continues Tacitus’ Histories from 96 to 378 ce . A veteran of Julian’s campaigns and an admirer of the emperor, Ammianus offers a vivid, wide-ranging account of the late empire, combining political and military events with insights into administration and society. These excerpts include Constantius II’s visit to Rome and the death of Julian, the last pagan emperor, on his Persian campaign.
