Abstract

This chapter explores how coins served as both currency and communication in the Roman world. Readers see how emperors, families, and events were celebrated through images and words that projected political power, divine favor, and claims to legitimate authority. From the Republican denarii of Brutus to Constantine’s coins honoring the Unconquered Sun, these artifacts reveal how Romans used money to circulate messages about legitimacy, victory, and identity across an empire of vast diversity.
