Polybius
Abstract
This chapter presents selections from the Greek historian Polybius, who chronicled Rome’s dramatic rise from a regional power to dominance over the Mediterranean. Readers encounter his analysis of Roman military strength, political institutions, and the checks and balances of the mixed constitution. Polybius combines vivid descriptions of battles with sharp reflections on cause and consequence, offering both a narrative of events and a theory of history that influenced later thinkers from Cicero to the framers of the U.S. Constitution.
