Abstract

This chapter features Sallust’s War With Catiline , a vivid account of a failed conspiracy to overthrow the Roman state in 63 bce . Writing in a concise, archaic style, Sallust portrays Catiline and his followers as products of the moral decay that followed Rome’s imperial conquests. His work combines political history with sharp moral critique, arguing that corruption and ambition had corroded republican values, an influential interpretation that shaped later Roman and Christian thought.
