Abstract

This chapter features Julius Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War , accounts of conquest written by the general himself. In clear, direct prose, Caesar describes the campaigns that expanded Rome’s power and secured his own rise, portraying himself as decisive and merciful. These dispatches not only reveal Roman military strategy and imperial ambitions but also offer rare ethnographic glimpses of Gallic and Germanic societies, showing how warfare, politics, and culture intertwined at Rome’s northern frontiers.
