Abstract

This chapter presents Cornelius Nepos’ Life of Hannibal , a concise Latin biography of Rome’s most formidable enemy. Writing for Roman readers unfamiliar with Greek historiography, Nepos pioneered biography as a way to compare cultures and illuminate character. His portrait of Hannibal emphasizes strategic genius, relentless hatred of Rome, and dramatic reversals of fortune, from Alpine victories to exile and death, offering insight into both a legendary commander and Roman views of their greatest adversary.
