Abstract

This chapter presents selections from Livy’s monumental From the Founding of the City , tracing Rome’s rise from mythic origins to Mediterranean dominance. Livy’s vivid narratives span defining moments: Romulus and Remus and the kings of Rome; the establishment of the Republic and the Twelve Tables; Cincinnatus’ virtuous dictatorship; Camillus after the Gallic sack of Rome; Hannibal’s campaigns and Scipio’s victory at Zama; Flamininus’ proclamation of Greek freedom; debates over the Oppian Law; the Peace of Apamea; the suppression of the Bacchic cult; and Hannibal’s death. These stories shaped Roman ideals of law, duty, power, and destiny.
