Abstract

Since 1998, efforts to find alternative cinema spaces in Indonesia have included those where moving image practices and art intersect. This has given rise to new mediums, such as video art or experimental films, raising questions about their position in Indonesian cinema history. This chapter discusses two audio-visual festivals in Jakarta, OK.Video: Jakarta International Video Festival and Arkipel: Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival. It examines filmmaker-artists who work at the intersection between cinema and art, presenting not only at film festivals but also art exhibitions. This chapter frames the intersectional practices of cinema and art as a form of “post-cinema.” If the history of cinema mostly emphasizes conventional narrative cinema, these other practices redefine the moving-image medium itself.
