Abstract

The issue of social justice has been central to the concerns and actions of educational and vocational guidance. People during their career paths face various transitions. Career sustainability theory considers that different career experiences can provide continual growth, resulting in meaning and well-being for individuals over time. However, in an uncertain world where people face multiple transitions, support is needed to avoid the risks of precarity. Lifelong learning and vocational guidance are crucial for individuals’ sustainable career development. In addition, different contemporary challenges, such as global warming and the necessity of an ecological transition, imply that our discipline must combine the promotion of sustainable careers with ecological sustainability, referred here as squared sustainable careers. We thus need to consider at the same time social justice issues and career sustainability, and to include the question of planetary boundaries and the environmental impact of human activity in our actions and interventions.
