Abstract

Accountability is an essential element of work, ensuring that employees’ actions are aligned with organizational goals. While it is possible to objectively determine the accountabilities that an employee faces (their accountability systems), it is ultimately how a worker experiences their accountabilities that shapes their views and behavior within the workplace. As such, in this chapter, we overview the relationship between felt accountability and three important work variables: job performance, work stress, and job satisfaction. We then conclude by discussing future opportunities for felt accountability research.
