Implementation of Surgical Specialist’ Communication in Delivering Pre-Operative Informed Consent to Patient at Edelweiss Hospital Bandung
Abstract
Surgical procedures are among the main triggers of stress and psychological disorders such as anxiety. Elevated anxiety levels can result in increased blood pressure and a higher risk of bleeding. Patients have the right to receive comprehensive information about surgical procedures, which is essential not only to alleviate anxiety but also to foster trust and rapport between healthcare providers and patients. To minimize anxiety, physicians must provide clear explanations regarding the diagnosis, the proposed operation, possible consequences, and post operative conditions. This process is formalized through pre-operative informed consent. This study aims to explore how surgical specialists at Edelweiss Hospital Bandung communicate informed consent to patients prior to surgery. The specific objective is to collect data on communication practices that address patient anxiety and use this information to develop a communication guideline for pre-operative consultations. The study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach involving in-depth interviews and observations of surgeons and patients. Findings will contribute to enhancing doctor patient communication strategies, particularly in managing pre-operative anxiety, and are expected to result in a publishable article in a nationally accredited medical journal.
