Abstract

This study examines the impact of exposure to violence and legal cynicism on adolescents' sensitivity to violence in Mexico. The study employs a quantitative and cross-sectional design and uses data from the International Self-Report Delinquency Study (ISRD-4) in Mexico. The sample consists of 2534 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. A multilevel model is estimated to assess both individual and contextual effects, with the aggregate level corresponding to the class group. The findings do not support the hypothesis that exposure to school or neighborhood violence affects sensitivity to violence. However, experiencing victimization, and specifically, parental violence are linked to heightened sensitivity to violence, while legal cynicism, both on an individual level and in its aggregate form, is associated with reduced sensitivity. These findings are discussed within the framework of the Situational Action Theory, highlighting their implications for public policies aimed at preventing violence and strengthening the relationship between citizens and the justice system.
