Abstract

Exhaust valve is an exhaust gas place that functions to remove combustion gases that occur in the cylinder. During the journey from Anyer to Thailand, precisely in the Galasa Strait, there was a high temperature alarm on cylinder no.2 of the main engine, this resulted in the main engine experiencing a slow down which finally shut down. The purpose of this study is to find out the factors that cause high exhaust gas temperatures to maintain the performance of the main engine, to find out the impact of high exhaust gas temperatures to maintain the performance of the main engine, and to find out the efforts to overcome the high exhaust gas temperature to maintain the performance of the main engine. In this study, a qualitative research methodology with the fishbone approach method used for the object to be observed is described with theories obtained from various sources regarding the materials used, as well as efforts on the ship through observation and direct maintenance and repair of the main engine cooling system to facilitate ship operations. The results of this study find out the causative factors of the high exhaust gas temperature, due to clogging of the the hole of fresh water cooling seat valve, which is caused by sludge deposits and rust debris that accumulates in the hole of fresh water cooling seat valve, The impact caused by the causative factor is the high temperature of the exhaust gas. The efforts made are to clean the hole of fresh water cooling seat valve, treat the water, and clean the pipe it aims to maximize the cooling system and the exhaust gas temperature is in a normal state.
