Abstract

The exponential growth of networked applications, cloud services, and data-driven platforms has significantly increased the complexity of traffic management in modern communication networks. Traditional network architectures, which rely on static configurations and distributed control mechanisms, are increasingly unable to cope with dynamic traffic demands and diverse quality-of-service requirements. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a promising solution by separating the control plane from the data plane and enabling centralized, programmable network control. This paper presents a comprehensive and large-scale performance evaluation of SDN-based networks for adaptive traffic management. An SDN-driven traffic management framework is proposed that continuously monitors network conditions and dynamically updates forwarding rules in response to congestion and traffic variations. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated using extensive simulations under varying traffic loads and network scales. Key performance metrics, including throughput, end-to-end delay, packet loss ratio, controller response time, and scalability, are analyzed and compared against traditional static routing architectures. Results demonstrate that SDN significantly improves network efficiency, responsiveness, and adaptability, making it a suitable solution for large-scale and dynamic networking environments.
