Seismic Re-evaluation, Structural Framework and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Mauddud and Nahr Umr Formations, Ratawi Oil Field, Southern Iraq
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to better understand the structural framework of the Mauddud and Nahr Umr formations in the Ratawi oil field, southern Iraq, which is a major hydrocarbon producer in southern Iraq. The Ratawi oil field is distinguished by a prominent structural closure that affects these important reservoir formations, with a steeper dip on its western flank and a pronounced longitudinal north-south trending axis. A mild homocline to the east delineates the field, while a synclinal feature divides it from the adjacent Subba oil field to the west. The Ratawi field's distinctive concave structural borders set it apart from the surrounding Subba (northwest) and Rumaila northeast oil fields. The origin of this structure is thought to be affected by either basement tectonics, Hormuz salt diapirism, or a complicated interplay of both. The methodology combined well log data with a complete seismic interpretation. This method facilitated the creation of time, velocity, and depth maps, as well as the conduct of extensive analyses of key seismic sections. The study focuses particularly on the northern segment of the Ratawi structure, which is distinguished by a convex fold with a distinct north-south longitudinal tendency. A thorough understanding of this structural framework is crucial for optimizing hydrocarbon exploration and development techniques in the Mauddud and Nahr Umr reservoirs.
