Abstract

This study aimed to provide foundational data for the advancement of coaching studies and the dissemination of coaching culture by analyzing domestic research trends on coaching competence. Following a literature review method, a total of 78 academic articles published in Korean journals on the topic of coaching competence were analyzed. The research trends were examined in terms of publication year and journal distribution, while the research content analysis covered research themes, methodologies, participants (samples), and related variables. The analysis of research trends revealed that studies on coaching competence first appeared in 2012, and 44 papers (56.4%) were published between 2021 and 2025, indicating quantitative growth. Regarding publication outlets, the majority appeared in journals categorized under social sciences (34 papers, 43.6%) and interdisciplinary studies (30 papers, 38.5%). In terms of content, first, most studies focused on the effects and impact of coaching competence (56 papers, 71.8%). Second, quantitative research methods were predominant (57 papers, 73.1%), with no qualitative studies identified. Third, studies involving parents (and their children) accounted for the largest portion of participants (24 papers, 42.1%). Fourth, among the 57 quantitative studies, 42 papers treated coaching competence as an independent variable, while 28 included mediating variables and 3 included moderating variables. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need for program development and effectiveness research, methodological diversification, expansion of research participants, and studies linking coaching competence with coaching culture.
