A Scoping Review of Coaching Competency in University Students
Abstract
This study conducted a scoping review to systematically analyze the overall trends and key findings of domestic research on university students’ coaching competency. Following the five-stage framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley (2005), a total of 14 relevant studies published in Korea up to November 2025 were reviewed and analyzed. The results indicated that research on university students’ coaching competency, which began in 2016, has shown a notable increase since 2020 and has predominantly been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, indicating an accumulation of research in this field. Coaching competency was reported to be significantly associated with variables such as career decision-making self-efficacy, career preparation behavior, self-esteem, and academic self-efficacy. However, methodological analysis revealed a strong concentration on quantitative studies, highlighting a gap in qualitative and mixed-methods research. This study contributes to the literature by mapping the current landscape of research on university students’ coaching competency and identifying existing research gaps, thereby offering implications for future research directions.
