The Influence of Adolescents’ Health on Smartphone Usage Time Mediated by Stress, and the Utilization of Exercise Recommendation AI
Abstract
This study aimed to explore the psychological factors influencing smartphone overdependence among Korean adolescents, an issue of growing concern.Specifically, it empirically verified the mediating effect of perceived stress in the relationship between adolescents' subjective health perceptions and their smartphone usage time.Furthermore, the study analyzed the current status of AI-based exercise recommendation technology as a practical approach to promoting adolescents' physical activity, while also exploring its limitations and considerations for application to this age group. For this research, raw data from the '20th (2024) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS)' provided by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) were utilized. The findings revealed that the more adolescents perceived themselves as healthy, the lower their stress levels and weekday smartphone usage time.Perceived stress partially mediated this relationship. At the same time, AI-based exercise recommendation technology shows potential, issues such as cultural bias in datasets and a lack of consideration for age-specific characteristics were identified. Therefore, this study empirically confirmed the importance of stress management through healthy physical activity in preventing smartphone overdependence among adolescents.Furthermore, the study suggested that the future development of AI-based exercise recommendation systems should be preceded by the establishment of a dataset that reflects the unique lifestyle patterns and cultural characteristics of Korean adolescents.
