A Study on the Typology of Energy Consumption Indicators for Data-Driven Energy Efficiency
Abstract
This study investigates a methodological approach to enhancing or reducing building energy use by analyzing and categorizing energy consumption indicators derived from building-level energy data.As a representative case, electricity consumption data from a university campus-characterized by a dense concentration of diverse building types within a single site-were examined to explore how energy-use characteristics vary by building function. The analytical procedure consisted of several stages.First, buildings were grouped by functional category, and major energy consumption indicators for each group were then calculated.Next, the mean values of these indicators were statistically analyzed to identify those that showed significant differences across building types. The indicators selected through this process include Energy Use Intensity (EUI), load variability, base load ratio, and heating sensitivity.By examining combinations of these indicators, the study derived four distinct types of energy consumption patterns. These typologies, grounded in observed consumption data, offer meaningful insights that can serve as a foundational resource for designing effective, targeted energyefficiency policies. Moreover, the study contributes empirical evidence supporting the use of building energy consumption indicators as a practical tool for implementing data-driven energy-efficiency strategies-an area in which systematic, evidence-based approaches are increasingly required.Nevertheless, because the analysis focuses on a specific and limited set of buildings, the generalizability of the findings may be constrained.Future research should extend the discussion on data-based energyefficiency planning to develop more comprehensive typologies across a broader range of building sectors and operational contexts.
