A Case Study on Elementary English Classes Using Chromebooks
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the impact of digital device-based learning on elementary students' English language acquisition through a case study of using Chromebooks in English lessons. While digital device-based learning has become widespread in educational settings, there is a lack of specific research on the use of Chromebooks in classrooms. To address this gap, the study was conducted in a 5th-grade class at an elementary school in Sejong City, where Chromebook-based English lessons were designed, and their effects were empirically analyzed. The research consisted of 16 weeks of lessons, with one class per week. The lessons covered a range of activities, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking.Chromebook tools, such as online quizzes, Google Classroom, and audio recording and evaluation systems, were used in the learning process. The results showed that Chromebook-based lessons significantly increased students' engagement and interest in learning, and positively affected their ability to engage in self-directed learning.Notably, students demonstrated noticeable improvements in writing skills as they shared their work online and received feedback from their peers.Furthermore, students showed a positive shift in their attitudes towards the lessons.Students who were initially reluctant became more confident in their English learning towards the end of the study.Teachers reported that using Chromebooks made the lessons more efficient and facilitated easier classroom management. This study demonstrates that Chromebook-based English lessons can provide substantial support for elementary students' language learning. It highlights the need for further research on the use of other digital devices in educational contexts.
