Abstract
This article examines the trips of the young Grand Duke Ivan IV to the TrinitySergius Monastery in the 1530s‑1540s, during the boyar rule that followed the death of Vasily III. Chronicle sources mention sixteen such trips (1536–1546). In the overwhelming majority of cases, members of the grand ducal family are listed among those accompanying the Grand Duke (brothers: Yuri Vasilyevich, and later Vladimir Andreevich Staritsky, mother, the Grand Duchess and de facto ruler of Russia, Elena Vasilyevna Glinskaya). Until 1545, “boyars” are constantly mentioned among Ivan IV’s retinue. In three such trips, the accompanying persons are named. This allows researchers to draw conclusions about the influence of certain representatives of the court elite and their proximity to real power. In addition, probably, from the point of view of the compiler of the chronicle, these pilgrimages had special significance for some reason. The author attempts to clarify these reasons. From spring 1545, however, the boyars cease to appear in chronicle stories about pilgrimage trips. The author of this article believes this absence indicates the end of the official guardianship over the young Grand Duke, which had been established after the death of Grand Duke Vasily III. At the same time, this need not indicate that boyar rule had ended at this time, as Ivan IV was, at this point, still not involved in the daily affairs of governing the state. This study is based on chronicle sources.
