Abstract

XVII в. XVII в. This article reconstructs a historical portrait of Hieromonk Tikhon of Kazan from the Trinity- Sergius Monastery. He most likely came from the posad (merchant/artisan) class and took monastic vows, evidently at the Trinity Feodorovsky Monastery in Kazan. As a monk of the Trinity- Sergius Monastery, Tikhon is first mentioned in 1632, when he was engaged in salt production at the monastery’s saltworks in Sol Galitskaya. By 1635 he had already become a cathedral hieromonk (soborny starets). In the 1640s, Tikhon of Kazan served as builder of the Trinity Alatyr Monastery and the Trinity Sviyazhsk Monastery, both of which were affiliated with the Trinity- Sergius Lavra. The elder was involved in book culture. We know of manuscripts and printed books from his personal cell library. We have evidence of his interest in Russian history in two short chronicle compilations. As a person engaged in economic activities, he made extracts from the Sobornoye Ulozheniye (Law Code) of 1649 containing the new legal norms concerning court trials of peasants. In the second half of the 1640s, Tikhon of Kazan either fell seriously ill in old age or withdrew from active duties. From 1646 onward he actively donated books and manuscripts from his library. Tikhon of Kazan died in January 1656 and was buried in the Trinity- Sergius Monastery, as attested by a gravestone with an epitaph discovered in 2011 near the southern wall of the Dormition Cathedral.
