Abstract

This article analyses the text of the panegyric to Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich of Tver (the so-called “Preface”) and Tver Collection chronicle entries from the first half of the fifteenth century. The author shows that the chronicler viewed the events from more than a local perspective. The Principality of Tver is presented as an organic part of the Russian lands as a whole, and of Orthodoxy as a whole, the physical embodiment of which is the “House of the Holy Saviour.” Genealogies trace the Tver Rurikids back to Vladimir Sviatoslavich and construct a religious- dynastic mythology that links the baptism of Rus′ with the dynasty which defends Christian Rus′ in the face of external threats.
