Investigation of deaths and sociodemographic profile in patients with epilepsy in the belém metropolitan area, between the years 2020 to 2024
Abstract
Objective: The investigation of deaths in patients with epilepsy is of particular importance, since the disease is associated with a high risk of sudden death and other complications. Given this, the present research is justified, given the importance of analyzing the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients who have died, making it possible to identify characteristics and factors that increase the risk of mortality, allowing preventive actions to be directed at the most vulnerable groups. This study aims to investigate deaths and the sociodemographic profile of patients with epilepsy in the region of Belém, Pará, between 2020 and 2024. Method: This is an epidemiological, ecological, descriptive, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach based on DATASUS data. Variables such as gender, age group, region of residence, and location of occurrence were analyzed, considering hospitalizations and deaths related to epilepsy. Results and Discussion: The results showed that 42 deaths from epilepsy were recorded in the Metropolitan Region of Belém between 2020 and 2024. Belém accounted for most of the cases (30), while municipalities such as Ananindeua, Marituba, Castanhal, and Santa Izabel do Pará had lower numbers and annual fluctuations in notifications. Research Implications: The profile of the victims revealed a predominance of males, young adults, and self-declared brown-skinned individuals. There was a progressive increase in notifications in Belém over the analyzed period, contrasting with fluctuations in neighboring municipalities. The survey highlighted the heterogeneous distribution of deaths among the different municipalities in the region.
