Abstract

“Instrument of Unity? Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Chemical Research around 1950” by Carsten Reinhardt (German language) Carsten Reinhardt examines the introduction of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy into chemical research around 1950. Using Herbert S. Gutowsky as his central example, he shows how a physical instrument became useful to chemistry through chemical physics, chemical shift, spin-spin coupling, and structural interpretation. NMR did not reduce chemistry to physics; instead, it produced a unity within diversity.
