Abstract

“Is Nature Obedient? The Concept of Natural Law in the Early Modern Period” by Friedrich Steinle (German language) Friedrich Steinle examines the early history of the concept of natural law. From Roger Bacon and voluntarist theology through Francis Bacon and Descartes to the Royal Society, natural law shifted from first principles to empirically determinable regularities. Boyle, Hooke, Oldenburg, and Newton reveal the semantic flexibility of a concept that joined experimental natural philosophy, mechanics, and divine legislation.
