An Investigation into the Correlation Between Several Biochemical Factors in Covid-19 Patients and the Development of Renal Failure
Abstract
Background: In 2019, the respiratory illness known as Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) was caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can lead to Multi-Organ Failure (MOF) and eventually death. Aim of the Study: The current study aims to analyze the levels of kidney function tests, including blood urea, creatinine, uric acid, D-dimer and C-reactive protein. Materials and Methods: Between February and March 2022, 45 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were recruited for this case-control research at Tikrit Teaching Hospital. The current study involved 25 males and 20 females aged between 30 and 75 years. Individuals having a prior history of renal illness were excluded from the study. Additionally, control groups comprised 15 individuals. Result: The levels of creatinine, urea, uric acid, D-dimer and CRP were significantly elevated in COVID-19 patients, measuring (2.70±1.250 mg/dL, 83.1±6.91 mg/dL, 5.910±1.470 mg/dL, 828±90.2, 65.30±14.22) compared to the control group (0.474±0.229, 31.50±3.65, 5.100±0.17, 322±78.1, 6.760±0.796) respectively. The disparity was statistically significant (p0.05) in the levels of creatinine, uric acid and CRP between age groups (p-value>0.05). The urea level was elevated in group G3, but it decreased in age groups G1 and G2, with a p-value of less than 0.05. D-dimer levels increased in G2 and dropped in G1 and G3, with a p-value of less than 0.05. Conclusion: Increased blood urea and creatinine concentrations are dependable markers of renal involvement in COVID-19. Timely identification by regular testing can avert irreparable renal impairment and enhance patient outcomes.
