Strengthening the Supervision of Timber Forest Products in Supporting Sustainable Forestry Governance in Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia in an Integrated Manokwari Regency
Abstract
The supervision of timber forest products is a crucial instrument in ensuring forest sustainability and reducing illegal logging practices, which remains a persistent issue in various regions of Indonesia, including Manokwari Regency, West Papua. This study aims to analyze efforts to strengthen the supervision of timber forest products carried out by the local government and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with officials from the Forestry Service, Forest Management Units (KPH), law enforcement officers, and communities surrounding forest areas, complemented by field observations and document analysis. The findings indicate that supervision has been implemented through licensing mechanisms, field patrols, and the utilization of forestry information systems. However, the supervision has not been fully effective due to limited human resources, vast forest areas, and low community participation. Strengthening supervision requires improving institutional capacity, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and actively involving local communities in a sustainable manner.
