Abstract

Religion has contributed immensely to the development of the society and humanity at large, and its effect manifests in almost every area of human endeavour. Existing scholarly work on religion has focused majorly on the psychological, emotional and spiritual impact it has made, however an area where there seem to be a dearth of literature is the aspect of the connectivity between religion and sports. This is the gap in study this work intends to fill. This paper therefore, attempted to draw a nexus between religion and sports not only in Nigeria, but in other climes. It also seeks to establish basic religious and ethical principles stipulated in the letters of various religious books and literature. Though, it seems difficult to believe that religion and sports have anything in common, however, there is an undeniable fact that Africans are very religious which makes religion to permeate every aspect of our lives including sports. The findings of this research indicate that stakeholders in sports use various methods and means to achieve success without considering the tenets of their faiths. The paper therefore recommends that stakeholders in sports should try as much as possible to put into practice the various values contained in their faiths, rather than cutting corner to achieve success.
