Patiënte met psychiatrische klachten als eerste symptoom bij een gecombineerde ziekte van Creutzfeldt-Jakob en ziekte van Alzheimer: gevalsbeschrijving
Abstract
A patient with psychiatric symptoms as the first presentation of a combined Creutzfeldt-Jakob and Alzheimer’s disease: case report A 63-year-old woman with no history of psychiatric problems presents to the emergency department with anxiety symptoms and hyperventilation. After psychiatric observation and additional diagnostics, her symptoms appear to be the first signs of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in combination with Alzheimer's disease (AD). CJD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a poor prognosis. In addition to neurological symptoms, patients with CJD also regularly manifest psychiatric symptoms. Rapid recognition of CJD is important in order to provide patients with the most appropriate care possible. Through this case report, we aim to emphasise the importance of an unbiased clinical assessment, both for general practitioners, emergency physicians, neurologists and psychiatrists. Based on a concise literature review, we further discuss the diagnosis and manifestation of the pattern of symptoms in CJD.
