Retirement Readiness: A Plan for Government Teaching Employees
Abstract
Retirement is a critical life transition, yet many government teaching employees face challenges due to inadequate preparation. This study examined the extent of retirement readiness among government teachers in the Division of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, focusing on four key dimensions: financial planning, wealth accumulation, health maintenance, and social engagement. Using a descriptive quantitative research design supported by methodological triangulation, data were gathered from 93 purposively selected teachers aged 55 to 59 years old through a validated survey questionnaire and follow-up interviews. Findings revealed that teachers generally demonstrated a high level of readiness, particularly in managing finances, maintaining health, and sustaining social connections. However, notable gaps remained in wealth management, insurance coverage, and post-retirement income diversification. To address these gaps, the study proposed a comprehensive Retirement Readiness Intervention Plan comprising seven components: freelancing and consultancy; small business and agri-enterprise development; handicraft and livelihood projects; digital entrepreneurship; mentorship and part-time teaching; health and wellness programs; and vocational or technical skills training. The study concludes that while teachers are relatively ready for retirement, institutionalized programs are essential to ensure a secure and fulfilling post-service life. Policymakers and educational leaders are urged to implement the proposed intervention plan to better support retiring educators. These findings offer valuable insights for developing evidence-based strategies for the retirement of educators.
