Abstract

The study aimed to analyze prenatal care indicators in the state capitals of Brazil’s Northern Region from 2020 to April 2025, with an emphasis on early initiation of care and continuity of care in primary health care. This is a descriptive, exploratory, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach, based on publicly available secondary data from the Health Information System for Primary Care (SISAB). The following indicators were analyzed: proportion of pregnant women with a first prenatal visit, initiation of care by the 12th week of gestation, completion of tests by the 20th week of gestation, and number of visits per pregnant woman. The results showed low adherence to early initiation of prenatal care, with differences among state capitals, a predominance of pregnant women with an insufficient number of visits—below the recommended level—as well as variations among the municipalities analyzed. It is concluded that weaknesses persist in prenatal care in the Northern region, particularly related to the late initiation of follow-up and low continuity of care, indicating the need to strengthen primary health care initiatives to expand access and improve the quality of care provided.
