Leishmaniasis research in Colombia (2005–2025): A bibliometric analysis
Abstract
This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the scientific production on leishmaniasis in Colombia between 2005 and 2025. A total of 631 records were initially retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases; however, after a rigorous deduplication and preprocessing phase, a final sample of 402 unique documents was analyzed. A rigorous evaluation was conducted by employing bibliometric and scientific collaboration network analysis techniques to assess productivity, citation, and co-authorship indicators. The findings indicate a persistent growth trajectory in national production, indicative of a progressive consolidation of the scientific field surrounding leishmaniasis in Colombia. The majority of articles are concentrated in institutions of the Colombian scientific axis, primarily the University of Antioquia, CIDEIM, and the National Institute of Health. There has been a notable increase in international collaboration with the United States, Brazil, and Spain. The most prolific journals in this field include Biomédica (INS), PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, and the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Moreover, the most frequently cited authors include Vélez, I. D., Ramírez, J. D., and Ovalle-Bracho, C., who are at the forefront of research in molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of Leishmania spp. in the country. The results of this study demonstrate sustained scientific consolidation, strengthening of academic networks, and growing international projection.
