La imposibilidad de América Latina: vaivenes editoriales y políticas de la representación continental en Companhia das Letras
Abstract
This article examines the trajectory of the São Paulo-based publisher Companhia das Letras in the recent history of Brazilian publishing, focusing on its influence on the national market and its continental projection. The analysis centers on how it has intervened in the local literary landscape and, unintentionally, promoted a fragmented view of Latin American literature. With editorial excellence as a priority, even during periods of low sales, the publisher managed to carve out a commercial niche. However, this strategy has created a tension between the coherence of its catalog and the pursuit of profits, thus hindering the consolidation of a comprehensive vision of national and Latin American literature. Finally, the article highlights the importance of Companhia das Letras in defining “high Brazilian literature” in contexts of economic instability and changing reading preferences.
