Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in Wordsworth’s Poetry
Abstract
Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) represent a vast body of philosophical, spiritual, ecological, and ethical thought rooted in ancient Indian traditions such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Vedantic philosophy. Although William Wordsworth had no direct engagement with Indian texts, his poetry reveals striking conceptual parallels with Indian epistemology, particularly in its emphasis on nature, spiritual unity, intuition, and self-realization. This paper explores how Wordsworth’s poetic vision aligns with core principles of IKS, focusing on concepts such as the unity of existence, nature as a living presence, intuitive knowledge, and the harmony between humanity and the cosmos. By placing Wordsworth’s poetry in dialogue with Indian philosophical ideas, this study highlights the universality of spiritual and ecological wisdom across cultures
