Abstract

Rajasthan, particularly its arid and semi-arid regions, harbours a remarkable diversity of xerophytic vegetation that has evolved unique adaptive mechanisms to survive under extreme environmental conditions. Besides their ecological importance, these plants represent valuable biological resources with significant economic, medicinal and industrial applications. Indigenous communities have traditionally utilized xerophytic species for food, fodder, herbal medicine, fuelwood, fibre, gums, resins and various household purposes. Recent scientific investigations have further demonstrated that many xerophytic plants contain diverse phytochemicals including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides, tannins and phenolic compounds, which possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and anticancer properties. These characteristics have enhanced their importance in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic and herbal industries. The present analytical review evaluates the economic, medicinal and industrial significance of major xerophytic vegetation occurring in Rajasthan through a comprehensive synthesis of published scientific literature. Rather than relying on field-based observations, the study adopts a qualitative analytical approach to compare the multifunctional roles of xerophytic species in supporting sustainable livelihoods, traditional healthcare systems, industrial development and environmental sustainability. The review also highlights the contribution of these plants towards rural employment generation, climate-resilient agriculture and biodiversity conservation. Furthermore, the study discusses major challenges affecting sustainable utilization, including habitat degradation, overexploitation, climate change, invasive species and inadequate value addition. Appropriate conservation strategies emphasizing scientific management, community participation, sustainable harvesting and industrial innovation are proposed to ensure long-term utilization of these valuable desert plant resources. The findings indicate that xerophytic vegetation represents not only an ecological asset but also an economically important natural resource capable of contributing significantly to sustainable development and the bioeconomy of Rajasthan.
