Abstract

From the early decades of the 20th century, the production of knowledge through science drove transformation in research and development in universities, leading them to seek answers to multiple human needs. The objective of this study was to understand the contributions of science and innovation in Latin American universities during the period 2015-2025.A qualitative approach was adopted, using a systematic literature review, following the PRISMA method guidelines.Six selection criteria were established, divided into inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Scopus and SciELO databases and the Latindex platform were used to conduct the search using keywords and Boolean operators.Initially, 814 related records were identified, which, after undergoing the identification, screening, and eligibility processes, were narrowed down to 17 articles for review.Of these, 11 articles fell within the qualitative approach, 4 within the mixed approach, and 2 within the quantitative approach.Considering the impact and quality of the publications, 9 of these are indexed in the Scopus database, of which 6 are in the Q1 quartile. It is concluded that, due to the inflexible structures that shape the current functionality of universities, the impact of scientific research and innovation has been limited by institutional barriers. The main obstacles to be overcome are access to financing and the lack of actions to strengthen community work between businesses, universities, and civil society.
