This article presents the findings of a qualitative study aimed at analyzing the significance of collaboration between artistic institutions and schools in Portugal and Spain, with the objective of strengthening the presence of the arts in school education. The study was guided by the following research objectives: (i) to understand how the collaboration between artistic institutions and schools contributes to the development of teaching competencies that enable the effective integration of the arts into school education; (ii) to assess the extent to which these collaborations foster the development of students’ skills for improved engagement with contemporary society; and (iii) to identify the main challenges faced by artistic institutions in their partnerships with schools. The findings indicate that both Portuguese and Spanish institutions value collaboration with schools as a key mechanism for promoting access to culture and innovative educational practices. The study underscores the need to strengthen the articulation between artistic institutions and educational establishments to enhance their impact and visibility within their immediate contexts. Among the principal challenges identified are limited logistical resources and the low level of artistic knowledge among teachers.
