Negotiating monastic precepts and thaumaturgical practices in medieval Chinese Buddhism.
Abstract
This research investigates the historical tension between Buddhist monastic precepts, which explicitly prohibit secular arts like divination and astrology , and widespread narratives of monks performing supernatural feats. Focusing on medieval China, this study will analyse texts and material culture to understand how these practices were legitimised within Buddhist frameworks.
