O CULTO DE HERA NO NORTE DA ÁFRICA: AS OFERENDAS DO HERAION DE NÁUCRATIS ENTRE OS SÉCULOS VII-VI AEC
Abstract
Since the Scientific Initiation research on the historiography concerning Naukratis and the Hellenion — funded by FAPESP (no. 2023/12757-0) — sought to scrutinize the process of formation and organization of knowledge about this settlement and its main sanctuary, this project proposes research that will delve deeper into the debate on the religious landscape of Naukratis, with a view to a study of the Naukratis Heraion. Thus, it aims to understand the specificities of the local cult of Hera, as well as its regional-level connections with other Heraia, more specifically, with the one on Samos. This understanding will be made possible through the analysis of the votive assemblages from this sacred precinct, dated from the 7th to the 6th century BCE. This corpus is composed of various types of pottery, terracotta figurines, fragments of stelae, and architectural molds made of limestone. The theoretical framework of this research will be grounded in two main axes: i. Greek religion and cultic practices in the Archaic period, focusing on the history and archaeology of religion and cult; ii. Global History, focusing on connections and integrations in the Ancient Mediterranean, exploring themes such as globalization and glocalization with a focus on ancient Greek religion. The study of the Naukratis Heraion is significant both because it was the only sanctuary of Hera in North Africa and because of the need to expand studies on the sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world, focusing on regions previously neglected by traditional historiography.
