Adapting through Culture: Integrating Traditional Knowledge into Australia’s Climate and Biodiversity Frameworks
Abstract
This PhD project asks how Aboriginal and other Indigenous knowledges can move from being treated as optional “input” to being recognised as core cultural infrastructure for climate adaptation and biodiversity governance. Focusing on Australia, and drawing on comparative Indigenous case studies internationally, the project examines how cultural infrastructure of traditional knowledge, Indigenous law/lore, stories, seasonal indicators and governance guides how people read Country, notice change and decide what to do, and how these ways of knowing can be better recognised and supported within contemporary climate adaptation and biodiversity governance.
