Evaluating the Use of Pre-Recorded Asynchronous Online Interviews for Postgraduate Psychology Course Admissions at Charles Darwin University
Abstract
This project aims to evaluate the use of pre-recorded, asynchronous online interviews implemented for the 2026 Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPC) admissions process at Charles Darwin University (CDU). The study will explore the experiences of three key stakeholder groups (applicants, academic staff, and administrative staff) to assess the fairness, accessibility, and efficiency of this innovative selection method compared with traditional synchronous or face-to-face interviews. Using a mixed-methods design, data will be collected via anonymous online surveys and optional semi-structured interviews. Additional anonymised system data will be provided by Vieple (Testgrid), the secure video interview platform used to host candidate recordings. An external representative from the Heads of Psychology Australia (HPA) will independently coordinate recruitment and data collection for CDU staff and accepted students to ensure impartiality. Findings will inform improvements to CDU’s admissions processes and contribute to national discussions about developing a centralised and equitable postgraduate admissions model across Australian universities. Results will be disseminated through academic publications, conference presentations, and a CDU/Vieple case study highlighting digital innovation in higher education.
