Perceived Risk and Barriers to Open and Responsible Research – Dataset presenting the results from a qualitative analysis of open-text responses from the first UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN) Open and Transparent Research (OTRP) Survey
Abstract
This online resource contains the coded data for a qualitative analysis of selected open-text responses to questions 1.12, 2.12, 3.12, 4.12, 5.12, 6.12, 7.12, 8.12, 9.12, 10.12, 11.12, 12.12, 13.12, and 14.12 in the first UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN) Open and Transparent Research (OTRP) Survey. The full survey data and metadata are available at https://doi.org/10.48420/22094216 and detailed in a data descriptor at:Hughes-Noehrer, L., Aubert Bonn, N., De Maria, M. et al. UK Reproducibility Network open and transparent research practices survey dataset. Sci Data 11, 912 (2024). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-024-03786-zThe survey asked about 14 open research practices, capturing respondents' on their own practices; perceived importance of the topic; available support, help, and training; and potential risks and barriers to undertaking the practices in their institution. The present dataset shows the coded data resulting from an inductive qualitative analysis of open-text responses describing the potential risks and barriers to undertaking the practices in their institution. Responses answered to the question 'If this topic involves risks or barriers to you or to your field of study, please briefly explain here' which was asked after each practice mentioned in the survey, namely: Q1.12 - Research co-production;Q2.12 - Conduct of open research consistent with relevant legal, ethical and regulatory constraints;Q3.12 - Transparent qualitative data;Q4.12 - Data management;Q5.12 - Pre-registration of research protocols;Q6.12 - Use of open source software;Q7.12 - Creation of open source software;Q8.12 - Version control of research products;Q9.12 - Computational reproducibility of data analysis;Q10.12 - Sharing of data, code, or other evidence according to the FAIR principles;Q11.12 - Guidelines for recognising the specific substantive contribution of everyone involved in research projects;Q12.12 - Declaration of interests;Q13.12 - Publication of preprints; andQ14.12 - Open access publishing. For each response, we highlight the practice (i.e., question number), theme, and clusters (grouping of themes) in which we coded the response. Some responses were coded in more than one theme, and will therefore appear multiple times in the dataset. This resource includes an associated codebook which provides further details on the dataset and on the different themes and clusters coded.
