Abstract

Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/5, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, Grand Hotel Metropole, Bad Nauheim, Germany to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, 3rd June [1905]: "Could you wire me "all right" if Dr. Champney says it will be - after he examines you. It is hard for me to be here - and not know all at once. Would it tire you to tell me just what he says in a letter beside the wire...O darling I pray that it may go all right. If your child grows up you will understand what a mother feels. I love you & Erskine so fightfully, so tenderly, I want everything to be successful for my darling precious children. Harry will tell you all about us. Kiss Erskine for me. Tell him how I adore him & his nature." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
