Margaret C. Osgood to Hamilton Osgood, [approximately December 1905?]. IE TCD MS 7867/107
Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/107: a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, [London, England?] to her husband Dr. Hamilton Osgood (month/year not identified, but approximately December 1905?): "Hammy darling, your letters come regularly and bring me joy. The morning bulletin is: Mother very well, Baby very well, Father very well, Granny very well. I do not think Molly will nurse the baby. I advised against it, so did the nurse. Mollie became rather depressed after each struggle of the baby to get the nipples which are quite obstinate. It is about I might say wholly decided to give him peptonized milk, that is Dr Champneys favourite way of feeding babies & I have absolute faith in him. As for the nurse, she is perfect. She believes in coddling babies, and he is taken up into her arms after & loved. She told me last night that babies need an enormous amount of affection. She won't let him cry. She told Mollie to ask in London whether her babies are ever spoiled. She has a reputation for well disciplined babies. She will stay with Molly two months thank God. I must copy a clipping Dr Champney gave me yesterday. I enclose it. I was caught out in the fog yesterday. I was on top of an omnibus with Robin. It came down on us, we couldn't see the electric lights or even the horses, nothing. Carriages going up on the sidewalk. I told Robin I must get down. He said "It is more dangerous on the sidewalk walking becasue of being run over. I insisted & got off while the omnibus was slowly going the horses finding the way. We walked by the side of fences & walls & got home after difficulties. A great experience. Will you or Grete attend to the "Mind" for George. I enclose his letter. Your German telegram arrived & is in Molly's book. Love to you my darling. You are my sweetheart. I am able to be up nights & go back to bed & sleep at once [?]. I send you back Cog's letter." Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
