Abstract

IE TCD MS 9376/1032: Copies of two letters from Michael Davitt, Dalkey, Co. Dublin, Ireland to Richard O'Ryan [Risteárd Ó'Riain] dated from the 16th to 19th July 1903 concerning the donation of his book 'The Boer Fight for Freedom: From the Beginning of Hostilities to the Peace of Pretoria' to the Library in Clonmel. Letter no. 1: "I am very thankful for your kind letter about my book on the Boer War. I am sneding through you a copy of the first edition for the Free Library of your ancient city* of which I am, I believe, an adopted citizen. Thanking yourself and your friends for your kindly wishes, which I sincerely reciprocate... (*the aancient city referred to above, is Clonmel R.O'R)." Letter no 2: "You will confer a favour upon me by not giving publicity to the presentation of the book to your Free Library. It is too small a thing for any recognition of that kind. Moreover, I would be besieged for copies (which I have not got) from other quarters which would cause me a good deal of letter writing & other trouble of which you can only form a faint idea. I will feel thankful therefore if you will take such steps as will have the book added to the Library without any publicity of any kind..." Recovered by Mrs. Mary Davitt.
