Abstract
Digitised version of IE TCD MS 7867/49, a letter written by Margaret C. Osgood, 8 Mount Vernon Place, Boston, Massachusetts, United States to her daughter Mary Alden Childers, and her son-in-law Erskine Childers, 2nd October (year not identified, but possibly between approximately 1911-1915?): "O Molly & Erskine, I am just back here from Brooklin & go out in the motor to Harvard for a night to pack. Your letters made me cry, and I cried in the Post Office when I got Molly's registered wonderful letter. It was as if it had come straight from God, so loving & tender & so understanding. I longed for you both so I felt as if I must fly. And now your cable has come, and I willl give up Italy if you can really go with me Xmas as you say. Couldn't we take little Erskine, we wouldn't travel much, or we would buy a horse & carriage & drive. O the joy of being with your loving uncritical souls. Grete is a darling & I adore her, she is sorry for her hardness to me. O Ellen Barrows is to blame for much. I inclose Cornelia's letter. I will write & tell you my steamer I will stop off at Queenstown & see Bob, then take him to London for a week. I can't sail before the 25th because of dentistry & things. Darlings, you will never know what I feel to you. You all just squeezed up against me. Erskine is just my love, and my real son, o darlings!" Margaret Cushing Pearmain Osgood (1847-1941), was an American writer and poet, mother to writer and nationalist Mary ('Molly') Alden Childers who was married to Erskine Childers, and the maternal grandmother of Erskine Hamilton Childers (1905-1974) who became the fourth President of Ireland 1973-1974.
