Abstract

IE TCD MS 9659d/209: Telegram from James Stephens (alias James Edmunds), Calais, France (after his escape from Richmond Prison, Dublin on 24th November 1865), to [his wife, Jane?] Mrs. Stephens [=his wife, Jane?], [Kil-?] Hotel dated 18th March 1866: "All is well the address is Mr Edmunds [No. eight?] Rue Geoffroy Marie Paris". With added MS note in a different hand at the bottom: "From the Captain on his escape from Ireland March 1866". Part of letters and papers of James Stephens (1824/5-1901), the Fenian Chief, bought for Michael Davitt by James Collins after Stephens' death. They are derived through Dr. T.W. Moody, from Dr. Michael Davitt, a grandson of Davitt's. Davitt found them disappointing, and they obviously amount to only a fraction of all Stephens' letters and papers.
