Abstract

IE TCD MS 9377/1052: Letter from Michael Davitt, Ballybrack, Co. Dublin, Ireland to John O'Leary dated 29th April 1888 referencing the poor people in Arran: "Many thanks for your letter and subscription. There are those who could spare £10 better than you can afford £1, who would let the wretched creatures in Arran starve, unless America did the food providing for them. A good response has been made to the appeal contained in my last letter to the Freeman. There will be enough of money forthcoming now I believe. It is sickening to have to ask for alms for any portion of our people, but it would be nothing less than a cowardly crime to allow them to starve rather than pride should be hurt..."
