Abstract

IE TCD MS 9386/1344: Letter from Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, Villa Cornelia, Cimiez, Nice, France to Richard Piggot dated December 1883 discussing careers in journalism in Australia: "Sydney is further from Melbourne than Paris is from Dublin; I was there only thrice in twenty years, and I [?] no resident journalist except the Editor of the Freeman's Journal whose politics you doubtless know... I could not take the responsibility of recommending you as a journalist with your present opinions. I pass no judgement on your contest with the Land League one way or the other, but... you have written things [injurious?] to Ireland, which no wrong inflicted by any [?] or harm would justify... Let me add as [?] Australia that the field for newspaper writers is narrow, and I have seen very able and accomplished men in sad straits..." At the top of the page 1 of the letter is a pencil note in Michael Davitt's hand: "Had evidently intended emigrating..."
